Making construction smarter

Topcon's new tech explained

Construction projects are complex puzzles. You have big machines, tight deadlines, and a need for everything to be perfect down to the last inch. Making all those pieces fit together efficiently and safely is a huge challenge. That’s why Topcon just revealed a new set of tools at CONEXPO 2026.

These new technologies are designed to make construction work smarter, not harder. They connect machines, people, and plans on one central platform. Think of it like a smart-home system, but for a massive construction site. The goal is simple: get work done faster, with fewer mistakes, and keep everyone safer. Let’s break down what these new tools do in plain English.

Murray Lodge, Topcon Executive Vice President

3D-MC Edge: Getting the perfect grade

At the heart of Topcon’s new lineup is an update to its 3D machine control software—technology that brings high‑precision automation to heavy equipment by using a 3D digital design to direct exactly where material should be placed or removed. The newest enhancements make the system more powerful, more intuitive, and easier to adopt across a wider range of machines. A standout addition is 3D‑MC Edge, a cost‑effective and rugged solution designed specifically for machines that traditionally don’t typically need premium machine control systems—such as scrapers, push dozers, and other equipment focused on efficient, high‑volume earthmoving. It provides reliable, real‑time guidance right at the cutting edge of a blade, giving operators the accuracy they need for everyday production tasks without the expense of a full‑featured system. Think of it like having a simple, dependable guide that helps maintain the right elevation across the work area—reducing rework, preventing over‑cutting, and improving overall productivity.

For contractors looking to bring digital precision to more of their fleet without a major investment, 3D‑MC Edge offers an economical way to boost consistency and efficiency on machines that previously operated without machine control technology.

New tools for excavators

Excavators are the workhorses of any job site, and Topcon has given them some impressive new skills to make them more productive and safer.

  • Slope control: Digging a precise slope, like a multi-tiered pond or berm, takes a lot of skill. Our new slope control feature automates this. The operator just needs to follow the on-screen guide, and the system automatically adjusts the bucket's tilt and angle to match the digital plan. This reduces the strain on the operator, helps finish complex jobs faster, and results in a much cleaner final product.
  • Hybrid Lock: This new 3D‑MC feature maintains continuous, accurate machine guidance by preventing downtime when a robotic total station temporarily loses line of sight to the prism — a common occurrence on active job sites where equipment, vehicles, or personnel can obstruct the beam. It remains fully LPS‑based but uses GNSS data to help the total station quickly reorient and relocate the prism. This allows excavation to continue smoothly, without waiting for the robot to regain lock on its own.
  • Onboard load weighing: Overloading a dump truck is dangerous and can lead to expensive fines and extra wear on the truck. This new feature weighs the material in the excavator bucket as it’s being loaded. The system helps the operator distribute the weight evenly and ensures the truck isn’t overloaded. It also prevents sending out trucks that are half-empty, which saves fuel and makes the whole operation more efficient.

“The industry continues to face shrinking margins, tighter specifications, and heightened sustainability expectations, and needs innovative approaches to complete projects on time, under budget, and with long-lasting results”

– Murray Lodge, Topcon Executive Vice President

Reliable positioning for heavy equipment in challenging conditions

The GTS‑M1 is a high‑precision positioning instrument that guides heavy construction machines in situations where accuracy is critical and GPS simply isn’t available or reliable. The GTS‑M1 follows a prism mounted on the machine, allowing it to maintain an exact position. This type of LPS is essential for work that demands tight tolerances, where even small deviations can translate directly into lost productivity or added cost. Applications such as fine grading, paving, and milling rely on this level of precision to meet stringent quality standards. The GTS‑M1 also plays a key role in Hybrid Lock, a feature that helps machines quickly reacquire and stay locked onto positioning sources. By combining LPS with GNSS, operators get more continuous, reliable control—especially on complex or constrained sites where accuracy directly equals money.

A smarter eye on safety

A construction site is a loud, busy place with massive machines and plenty of blind spots. The new Topcon awareness system acts as an intelligent safety assistant for operators. Instead of relying on AI cameras, the system uses AI‑driven software that continually analyzes the environment around the machine. It learns and adapts in real time—identifying people, equipment, or other objects, and even determining whether a person is facing the machine. This helps the system understand the urgency of a potential conflict and prioritize warnings accordingly.

The software also detects the movement of nearby objects or machines, providing operators with a clearer picture of what’s happening in all directions, even in areas they can’t see. When something enters a risk zone, the system immediately alerts the operator so they can react quickly and safely. Every event is automatically logged, giving contractors valuable insight into near‑misses and helping improve site‑wide safety practices over time.

Real‑time load data for smarter decisions

The new LM‑1000 load‑weighing system is an onboard scale designed for a wide range of loaders that pick up and move material—not just those handling large piles of gravel or sand. The LM‑1000 provides accurate, real‑time weight measurements as operators move different types of material across a site. The system is especially valuable in batch plant environments, where operators routinely handle multiple piles of different aggregates that must be mixed, measured, and transported with a high degree of accuracy. By knowing exactly how much material is being moved with each pass, operators can maintain precise blends and reduce costly material variances. It also helps ensure trucks are loaded appropriately—improving safety, reducing underloading or overloading, and increasing efficiency across the operation. All load information is automatically sent back to site management, giving project leaders a clear, up‑to‑date picture of material movement throughout the day.

Precision layout made frictionless

Origio is a next‑generation interior layout and spatial positioning system designed to help contractors quickly and accurately locate and mark points inside a building before installing construction elements such as walls, electrical components, and mechanical systems. Unlike traditional robotic total station workflows, Origo does not require a tripod, prism line of sight, or leveling the pole. Instead, it uses real‑time mapping and reusable spatial reference maps to automatically geo‑reference the operator within the space, continually updating position and orientation as the user moves—even when obstacles block the view.

Mounted on a single pole, Origo eliminates the hassle of setups, targets, sightlines, and bubble alignment, enabling a seamless, contractor‑friendly workflow that lets operators move freely through the building and place every point precisely as intended. By bringing speed, flexibility, and reliability to interior layout, Origo offers a more mobile, less equipment‑intensive alternative for teams transitioning from robotic total station workflows.

Building a better future

Our new technologies are more than just fancy gadgets and software—they’re practical, purpose‑built solutions to the real‑world challenges the construction industry faces every day. As contractors navigate rising cost pressures, a shrinking skilled labor pool, and an ever‑growing list of bids to keep up with, maximizing jobsite efficiency has never been more critical. Topcon’s innovations directly address these demands by making machines more accurate, workflows more streamlined, and job sites significantly safer. The result is measurable savings in time, rework, and operational costs.

For field professionals, these tools reduce the amount of manual guesswork and physical strain required to get the job done right the first time. For project owners and managers, they deliver more predictable outcomes—higher quality, delivered on schedule and within budget. Ultimately, Topcon’s solutions are helping build a smarter, more connected, and more resilient future for the entire construction ecosystem.
