MAGNET Field: Import a PDF file

Exchange File

Starting in the main screen, click on:

  1. Exchange
  2. From File

In the From File window, define:

  • Data: Multiple
  • Format: PDF

Browse for File

Browse for the desired PDF file.

Coordinate System

This dialog box displays information about the coordinate system in the job whose data is exported. Select the Coordinate Type for the data.

If the data is on a local coordinate system, select the following options:

  • Projection: none
  • Datum: none
  • Geoid Model: none
  • Coord Type: Ground

Import Status

The import process is reflected in the Import Status dialog box that contains a progress bar and comments about the import process. The progress bar displays the percentage of the points being imported.

Click Next to continue the process.

In the Import Status window, click Transform to open the Drawing Transformation window.

Drawing Transformation

MAGNET Field allows you to transform PDFs in three different ways:

  • Matching Line
  • Matching Point
  • Plotting Scale

Matching Line

For the transformation, the application performs the following operations:

  • Rotates the drawing around an origin point. The rotation angle is an azimuth of the job's line.
  • Scales the drawing. The scale factor is calculated as ratio of line length of the job to line length on the drawing.

In this dialog box, you need to specify the start and end points of a line on the background drawing and the start and end points of the same line in the current job.

  1. Click  in the Line Length field of the Drawing panel to open the Map dialog box. Using the corresponding buttons from the snap toolbar, select the start and end points of the line on the background drawing. The start point of the image is used as the origin point of the transformation. Click  to save the selection. The Map dialog box is closed, and the Line Length field displays the length of the selected line.

  2. In the Start Point and End Point fields of the Job Data panel, specify the start and end points of the job's line. The start point of the job is used as the origin point of the transformation. You can select them from the map  or from the list  of the job points. For the GPS device type, you can measure the start point coordinates by clicking . Click Next to start calculation of a relationship between pixel coordinates and the job's coordinate system.
  3. The Transformation Results dialog box displays the calculated transformation parameters between pixel coordinates to the job's current coordinate system: the plane coordinates of the origin point, the scale factor value, and value of the rotation angle of the background image. The right panel of the dialog box displays the transformation of the background drawing.
  4. Click Save to save the calculated transformation parameters to the application's database.

Matching Point

Select a common point on the background drawing and in the current job to transform the pixel coordinates of the background to the job's current coordinate system. In this dialog box, you can enter rotation and scale values for the background. This way is equal to grid-to-ground transformation in the horizontal plane with origin point and non-zero rotation angle.

For the transformation, the application performs the following operations:

  • Rotates the drawing around an origin point. The user can specify the rotation angle.
  • Scales the drawing. The user can specify the scale factor.

In this dialog box, you need to select an origin point and specify rotation angle and scale factor:

  1. Click  in the Select an Origin Point field of the Drawing panel to open the Map dialog box. Using the corresponding buttons from the snap toolbar, select a point on the background drawing. The point of the image is used as the origin point of the transformation. Click  to save the selection. The Map dialog box is closed, and the Select an Origin Point field displays Point Selected.
  2. In the Origin Point fields of the Job Data panel, specify a point of the job. The point of the job is used as the origin point of the transformation. You can select them from the map  or from the list  of the job points.
  3. In the Rotation field, enter the value of the rotation angle.
  4. In the Scale Factor fields, specify the value of Scale Factor.
  5. Click Next to start calculation of a relationship between pixel coordinates and the job's coordinate system.
  6. The Transformation Results dialog box displays the calculated transformation parameters between pixel coordinates to the job's current coordinate system: the plane coordinates of the origin point, the scale factor value, and value of the rotation angle of the background image. The right panel of the dialog box displays the transformation of the background drawing.
  7. Click Save to save the calculated transformation parameters to the application's data.

Plotting Scale

Select a current job's point as the origin point for background drawing rotation. In this case, the application will rotate the background relatively to the top left point of the background drawing.

For the transformation, the application performs the following operations:

  • Rotates the image around an origin point. The user can specify the rotation angle.
  • Scales the image. The user can specify the scale factor.

In this dialog box, you need to select an origin point in the job and specify rotation angle and scale factor. By default, the origin point of the image is the top left point of the background drawing.

  1. In the Origin Point field of the Job Data panel, specify a point of job. You can select them from the map  or from the list  of the job points. For the TS/GPS device, you can measure the point coordinates by clicking . If you did not select an origin point from the job, the application will use a point with plane coordinates (0;0) as the origin point.
  2. In the Rotation field, enter the value of the rotation angle.
  3. In the Scale Factor fields, specify the value of Scale Factor.
  4. Click Next to start calculation of a relationship between pixel coordinates and the job's coordinate system.
  5. Click Save to save the calculated transformation parameters to an ESRI World File. This file is saved in the background drawing folder.
