Delta Watch: How to set up THP data import

This article is for Delta Watch version 3.4 and lower!

For v3.10 and later check the article: Configure Meteorological module

This article will guide you step-by-step through the process of setting up THP data import into Delta Watch. Each Delta Link unit comes with its own basic weather station sensor, simply called THP sensor. THP stands for Temperature Humidity Pressure. To get the best results from this sensor and be able to apply accurate PPM corrections, it should be installed in an appropriate weather shield in a suitable location. The installation of the sensor goes beyond the scope of this document but is discussed in the actual Delta Link manual.

To be able to visualize the data, the user needs to configure Delta Watch (DW). Once this is done, the data can be viewed on its own in the Meteorological section under Project management or combined with geodetic observations.

Preparation

This guide assumes that:

  1. Your Delta Link unit is operational.
  2. The THP sensor is connected.
  3. Data flow from Delta Link to Delta Watch is working.
  4. You have some THP data files already on your system (either *.ENV or *.THP).
  5. Delta Watch v2.15.51 or higher is installed.
  6. A (empty) project is already created in Delta Watch.

General workflow

  1. Create sensor(s) in Administration > Point and limit management > Sensor management.
  2. Create import definitions in Interfaces > Import & Export.
  3. Create project visualization in Project management > Meteorological.
  4. [optional] Update map views and reports.

The following steps describe in more detail all actions required.

Setting up the sensor

Step 1 - Create the sensor

The first step is to add/create the sensor in the Point and Limit management module.

Navigate to Administration > Point and limit management > Sensor management.

On this tab, click the Add  button. A dialog box opens for configuring the new sensor details.

There are some important fields here, as marked in the image:

  1. Enter the last part of the filename exactly. By default, these are the last 6 digits of the serial number preceded by the letters DL. See further down a detailed example under THP filename anatomy.
  2. The Type needs to be set to Meteorological. This ensures correct processing and preconfiguration of the fields.
  3. [optional] Coordinates: To show the sensor on a map within Delta Watch or use in views especially for reporting, enter project coordinates for each sensor.
  4. [optional] Enter WGS84 coordinates for visualization in the Delta Live! Overview (MAP) section.

When done, click OK. The sensor is now created, and the sensor fields are added. The result might look similar to the image below. Repeat the steps above for any other THP sensors in the same project. Be sure to click Apply after adding a sensor to save your changes.

Step 2 - Customize the new sensor (optional)

The default configuration of all the THP sensor channels will be good enough for most usages. But they can be customized, and items such as alarms can be configured. It is also possible to do this at a later stage if required. Alarm limits will show on charts and can be used to trigger the sending of email messages.

  • Select the required sensor in the top-half of the screen.

Delta Watch will load all sensor channels in the bottom half. Select the channel that needs adjusting, and click on the Edit  icon.

  • Make your adjustments, and close the dialog box. Repeat the steps for any other channel, clicking Apply when done to save the changes to the database.

Note: Even though Delta Watch shows many sensor channels, the basic weather station that comes with a Delta Link kit only has 3: Temperature, Humidity, and Pressure.

Step 3 - Create the import definition

Now that the sensor(s) is created in the Point and Limit management section, you can create the import definition. Navigate to Interfaces > Import & Export.

Note: For THP sensors, you only have to create a single import definition per project. This will automatically import the data for each configured Meteorological sensor in the Point and Limit management section.

In the Import & Export section, click on  to add a new definition.

Configure settings as per the table.

Configure THP Import Settings
Setting Value
Name  A user-chosen name for this import definition
Sensor type  Set to Meteorological
Import/Export  Set to Import
Base directory  Directory where the data files can be found
Import type  Set to Meteorological (*.ENV) or AMTS - Meteorological (*.THP)
Select project  The destination project for which this import is
Comment  Allows the user to enter some information here

See the image below for an example of a configured THP data import definition.

Optional - Extended settings

  • Active: Allows activating/deactivating this import definition.
  • Start time: Specify the time for the start of the data. Normally this is in the future but could be a time in the past matching the date/time from which point onwards the data needs to be processed. Any data from before this time will not be processed.
  • Data time zone: For data files NOT generated by Delta Log, the date/time used to timestamp the data might not be UTC. If this is the case, specify here the correct time zone so that Delta Watch can convert the data correctly.

Optional - Monitor data transfer

It is possible to send an email message if data has not arrived for a certain amount of time. Click on   to add a recipient from the project contacts, and define the amount of time after which the message should go out. No contacts visible? Add them first in the Projects > Contacts section.

Finished

Once all is set up and saved to the database, Delta Watch will start monitoring for new files, depending on your start time. The status columns in the Import & Export module Latest datatransfer and Total datatransfer will update accordingly. An example of this can be seen in the image below.

Step 4 - Creating viewing definition

To visualize all project THP data on its own chart, either in Delta Watch or for Delta Live!, a view needs to be configured.

  • Navigate to Project management > Meteorological, and then Add Add a new sensor field, as per the image below. A dialog box shows where a name needs to be specified.

Note: You can combine multiple THP sensor inputs into a single definition.

  • Select the newly added sensor, and activate the Sensor field configuration tab.
  • Under the item Geotechnical sensors, click Edit. A new dialog box pops up where you can make your sensor selection. See image.
  • Select all relevant sensors on the left hand side that need to be added, and move them to the right by clicking on the  button. Then click OK and Apply.
  • In the Browser configuration tab, additional configurations can be done for visualization purposes in Delta Live! The WGS84 position specified here is the position on overview maps of this complete group of sensors. Individual coordinates for each sensor need to be specified in the Point and Limit management module under Sensor management.
  • Activate the Calculation tab so you can view the data. See image. If no data is visible, then check the following:
    1. Select one or more sensors from which you want to see the charts.
    2. Select the channel to visualize. Only one can be selected at a time.
    3. Adjust the Start and End-time to ensure these match your imported data.
    4. Click on Display to apply the selection of the above 3 items.
    5. Specific view adjustment can be made by clicking on the Chart options button. This allows, for example, for Y-axis scaling configuration.

THP filename anatomy

THP filenames are automatically generated by the Delta Log software. Below is a description of how to dissect this.

Filename construction: [date_code]_[time_code]_[name].thp

      [date_code] is yyyymmdd

      [time_code] is hhmm

[name] is DL and the last six digits of the Delta Link serial number OR a custom specified name

In our example,

Actual filename:              20170916_0030_DL000085.thp

     [date_code] is 20170916 which translates to 16-Sept-2017

[time_code] is 0030 which translates to 00:30 (24 hour clock)

     [name] is DL000085.

This is the exact string as it should be entered during configuration in the Name field in the Point and limit management > Sensor management table.
