MAGNET Modeler: How to set up a road line rule

MAGNET Modeler provides tools to quickly transform simple linework into a road or a road marking. You can even use your own creativity and utilize this feature for other objects as well.

The road line rule transforms linework into linear, colored areas along the surface. For road line model creation, MAGNET Modeler supports:

  • Lines
  • Strings
  • Polylines

Lines, strings, and polylines with zero elevation can be easily draped onto a surface.

Elevated lines, strings, and polylines can be used as well. This may result in a local adjustment of the surface.

Road line rule parameters

•  Layer

Layer where elements that define the road line are.

•  Materials

Click materials to access the Material Library of MAGNET Modeler. Select an existing material, or insert a new material.

•  Description

Enter a description for the road line rule. This will change the name of the rule within the Modeler Rules window. In case you have several road lines rules, this helps to easily identify them.

•  Group

Click group to choose from a list of existing groups/subgroups, or manually enter your group structure. Use the forward slash character (/) to create additional subgroups, for example, Existing/Office/Parking lot.

•  Width

Width controls the entire width of the road/road marking from the left edge to the right edge. The line, string, or polyline acts as the centerline.

•  Info text

Info text allows you to add additional information, such as material, quality requirements, manufacturer, etc. The info text information will be accessible in MAGNET Explorer via the Object Info tool.

•  Info URL

Info URL allows you to add hyperlinks such as a link to a manufacturer's homepage or a design document. The info URL link will be accessible in MAGNET Explorer via the Object Info tool.

•  Interpolate

Interpolate defines whether the line, string, or polyline is interpolated to a reference surface or the elevation is taken from the entity itself. It also controls whether the entity follows the ground or stays planar. See examples below for further details.

•  Target_layers

Target_layers is relevant when interpolate is set. You can choose whether the texture will only be projected onto a certain surface by selecting the surface from the layers list. The default value (*) means that all surfaces are affected.

•  Cut

  • Yes = Cuts out a reference surface within the extends of the road line area. This is the default setting.
  • No = Creates a copy of the surface with a slight positive offset and assigns the material to it.
  • Patch = Creates an optimized copy of the surface by reducing the number of triangles. This is very suitable for road markings.

•  TextureAlongPath

TextureAlongPath defines whether the texture will be mapped as a regular tile onto the surface (analog to a grass texture on a surface) or aligned and scaled by the direction and width of the road line rule.

•  Generation_priority

Generation_priority lets you determine the display order of overlapping material areas in the model:

  • 0 = Default/layer order
  • 1 = Generates after 0
  • -1 = Generates before 0

•  Auto_segmentation_distance

Auto_segmentation_distance densifies the string/polyline. This parameter is useful for a smoother interaction with a surface when draped.

•  Auto_segmentation_angle

Auto_segmentation_angle divides arcs of a string/polyline for a smoother interaction with a surface when draped.
