Delta Watch: How to restore the Identity transformation

Where is my Identity transformation?

In Delta Watch versions prior to v3.4.6, it was possible for the user to accidentally remove the Identity Coordinate transformation. This transformation is required by Delta Watch for any calculation and further processing of observation data. Unfortunately, once removed, there is no easy way of restoring it. This document describes the steps required to be performed manually by the user to ensure Delta Watch can continue to operate.

The same steps should be used in cases where the user wants to have different labels for an Identity transformation than the default names assigned by Delta Watch.

Check if Delta Watch is affected

First, a check needs to be done to see if Delta Watch is affected and is missing the required transformation. If this is the case, then a new Delta Watch version needs to be installed to solve this. It is always a good idea to stay up-to-date, as improvements are continually being made to Delta Watch.

How to check if the Identity transformation is available

It is easy to see if you are affected by the disappearance of the Identity transformation. The simple way is Method 1, but in case you cannot create a new project, follow Method 2.

Method 1

  1. Open Delta Watch, and navigate to Administration > Projects.
  2. Add a new project, and apply the changes. If you cannot add a new project because you have reached your maximum number of projects limit, then follow the alternative steps below.
  3. Activate the project, click Apply, and navigate to Administration > Coordinate transformations.
  4. If you cannot see a transformation called Identity transformation, then action is required as per this document. Refer to the image for an affected system.
  5. After checking, you can delete the project again.

Method 2

  1. Open Delta Watch, and navigate to Administration > Projects.
  2. If you know of a project that does NOT have any user coordinate transformation, then select that project. Otherwise, inspection of each individual project is required.
  3. Activate the project, and navigate to Administration > Coordinate transformations.
  4. If the section looks like the image above, then action is required. If there are custom coordinate transformations but not one called "Identity transformation," then also action is required.

Creating a new Identity transformation

If the Identity transformation was not found, OR if there is a requirement to change the default labels for the X, Y, and Z axis for a particular project without actually applying any coordinate transformation, then the steps described here should be followed.

If you only want to change the label names in a specific project, then the below steps should only be applied to that specific project, making sure the newly created transformation has a new and unique name!

If, at a later date, a new project is created, then this will also not have a default Identity transformation. Again, the steps below will need to be followed to add the new Identity transformation before continuing.

Please ensure you have Delta Watch v3.4.6 or higher installed. The latest version can be downloaded here. The version can be checked by starting Delta Watch and navigating to Help > About Delta Watch. This opens a dialog box with information.

Creating the new transformation

  1. Start Delta Watch, and go to Administration > Projects.
  2. Activate the first project, and apply the change.
  3. Navigate to Administration > Coordinate transformations, and click on the [+] (add) button.
  1. A new definition is added, and now it needs configuring as below.
    1. Transformation type: Rotation
    2. Name: Identity Transformation
    3. Axis labels as follows:
      Y-Axis Y
      Delta Y-axis ddY
      X-Axis X
      Delta X-axis ddX
      Z-Axis Z
      Delta Z-axis ddZ
    4. Rotation: 0 degree

Note: The order of X and Y labels has been adjusted to appear in the same order as on other places within Delta Watch

  1. Apply the changes, and close this module.

Assign the new transformation to the correct point groups

  1. Navigate to Administration > Point and limit management, and open the Point group tab.
  2. Right-click each point group that should have this Identity transformation, and select Set transformation. Point groups without transformation can be identified by checking the field Transformation of coordinates. If this contains a dash (-), then you need to assign the new Identity transformation.
  3. Now select the newly created transformation, and repeat for any other point groups.
  4. Apply the changes.

Assign the new transformation to the affected limit definitions

If alarm limits were configured in the Limit monitoring section, then these would also need to be checked and assigned the new Identity transformation, where missing.

  1. Go to the Limit monitoring tab, and select the first limit definition.
  2. Check the Transformation of coordinates drop-down list. If this is empty, then assign the new Identity transformation for this limit.
  3. Repeat the action for all limit definitions.
  4. Apply the changes when done.

Checking if a limit and point group use the same transformation

After updating both point groups and limit definitions, there is a simple check that can be performed to ensure that point groups with alarm limits assigned to them are correctly configured.

  1. Go to the Point group tab again, and click the Refresh button.
  2. If there was a mismatch between the coordinate system used by a point group and a limit, then that particular point group would have a warning triangle in front of it, as per the image.
  3. If a warning triangle is visible, correct this by making sure the limit definition uses the same coordinate transformation as assigned to the point group.
