DynaRoad: Installer download and installation

How to install DynaRoad

Installing DynaRoad consists of three phases:

  1. Download the installer.
    • Installers are available for download at the bottom of the article. (DynaRoad 5.6.3 installers.zip)
  2. Run the installer.
  3. Install a license.

Run the installer

After downloading the installer files (DynaRoad 5.6.3 installers.zip), run the installer.

Note: If you have an old version of DynaRoad running, close it before proceeding.

Running the installer is straightforward. Read the onscreen instructions, and click on the Next, Install, and Finish buttons as they appear.

Alternatively, IT administrators can deploy the software to multiple computers using Windows Group Policies.

After installation, you can start DynaRoad from the Start menu. DynaRoad starts in trial mode. During the 30-day trial period, the Plan and Schedule modules are fully functional, but DynaRoad Control is not active.

Install the license

You have to activate the program to be able to save and print. Your account manager will supply the activation key to you when you purchase the software.

Once you have received the activation key, open the Activation dialog box from DynaRoad's Help menu, enter the key, and click Activate. DynaRoad will then download your license and install it. Finally, restart DynaRoad for the license to take effect. If DynaRoad is unable to connect to the internet, see below for troubleshooting.

Setting up a license server

Setting up a license server is optional and is intended only for companies with floating licenses.

  1. Download the latest license manager installer at the bottom of the article. (DynaRoad 5.6.3 installers.zip)
  2. Install DynaRoadLicenseManager.msi on the server computer.
  3. Open a web browser on the server computer, and go to http://localhost:5054/.
  4. Go to the Activate License page, and click BEGIN License Activation.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Fill in the activation key provided by your account manager, and click Next (ISV should be dynaroad by default).
  7. Enter the number of licenses purchased into the License count field, and click Next (leave License Server or Node-lock hostid as default).
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click REQUEST LICENSE.
  10. Click (Re)Start License Server.
  11. Click REREAD/RESTART.
  12. Go to the Status page, and check that dynaroad is listed in ISV Servers at the bottom of the page.
  13. Close the browser.

Selecting a static hostid

Notice that the License Server or Node-lock hostid mentioned above must be static. If the hostid to which the license is tied changes, the license stops working until it is reactivated. Valid hostids are shown in the RLM System Info window.

Proxy server

If your company requires using a proxy server to connect to the internet, the proxy server needs to be specified. Add a system environment variable http_proxy, and set the value to server:port (e.g., myproxy:8080), and restart the DynaRoad License Manager service.

The license server connects to http://activate.dynaroad.com. A missing network connection, a firewall, or a required proxy server can cause the "Cannot connect to specified URL (-132)" error message.

Clients

Install DynaRoad locally for each user. When started, DynaRoad should discover the license server automatically. Run DynaRoad, and check that the license works, that is, that the program starts without error messages, and the license information in the Help – About menu is correct.

Troubleshooting

If the installer fails, it is helpful if you can provide us with the Windows Installer log file. To do that, run:

msiexec /L* log.txt /i DynaRoad-?.?.?.msi

(where ?.?.? is the current version of DynaRoad) in the folder which contains the installation package. Then send the log.txt file to our support.

For instance, if you downloaded DynaRoad-5.4.1.msi to your desktop, follow these steps:

  1. Start the command prompt by typing cmd to Start/Run... and click OK.
  2. Type cd %USERPROFILE%\Desktop and press Enter.
  3. Type msiexec /L* log.txt /i DynaRoad-5.4.1.msi and press Enter.
  4. Run the installer as far as possible.
  5. E-mail log.txt from your desktop to our support.

"Unable to connect to activation server"

or

"License error. Read error from network (-105)":

or

"License error. Communications error with license server (-17) HELLO message for wrong server (-107)":

An error message is shown if DynaRoad is unable to connect to the internet address http://activate.dynaroad.com via http to fetch the license. This can occur when opening DynaRoad or clicking the Activate button in the Activation dialog box. The problem is caused by a firewall, a missing network connection, or proxy settings unknown to DynaRoad.

Allow DynaRoad to connect to the address, or try activating the program using another network (e.g., a Wi-Fi network). If that does not help, send your activation ID to dynaroad-support@topcon.com, and we will send you a license file via e-mail. The activation ID is shown in DynaRoad's About dialog box, which is opened from the Help menu.

"License error. Communications error with license server (-17) Connection refused at server (-111)":

The message typically indicates that a firewall is blocking access to the license server.

The license server requires at least two open ports: one for the server itself (default 5053) and one for each ISV server (randomly determined). In case you only serve DynaRoad licenses, there will only be two ports in total (main and ISV).

The ISV port can be defined in the *.lic file containing the server license (typically, “C:\Program Files (x86)\DynaRoad License Manager\activate1.lic”). In this file, on the line beginning with “ISV dynaroad”, append port=X, where X is the desired port you wish to use. This port should not conflict with the port used by the main server itself (port 5053). The line should now look like this: ISV dynaroad port=X.

More information on setting up license servers behind firewalls can be found here.

"Clients cannot find the license server":

If DynaRoad clients cannot find the license server automatically, create a file called dynaroad.lic in Notepad to point the clients to the correct server. Make sure the file is of LIC file type. The dynaroad.lic file must contain the following line:

HOST server-host

Where server-host is the hostname or IP address of the license server (the same as the hostname in the RLM log file).

Example 1: HOST 172.16.254.1
Example 2: HOST server8
Example 3: HOST server8.example.com

For each client computer running DynaRoad, replace the existing dynaroad.lic file in the "%LOCALAPPDATA%\DynaRoad Oy\DynaRoad" folder with the new dynaroad.lic file.

"Files in Use":

Some files that need to be updated are currently in use. Please close all running programs before starting the installer.

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package":

This error message may be preceded by other errors, such as:

  • "A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file,"
  • "The system cannot open the device or file specified,"
  • "Error reading from file," or
  • "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory"

A common reason for these failures is that the Windows Installer requires the msi-file to be readable by the computer's SYSTEM user account. According to Microsoft, this behavior is by design. To work around the problem, copy the installer to a folder which is readable by the SYSTEM user account, e.g., your desktop.

Another reason may be that your virus scanner is scanning a file being accessed by Windows Installer. To work around this problem, disable your virus scanner during the installation, or just rerun the installer.

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package":

Verify that the download succeeded by comparing the installer file size to that listed on the download page. If the file size is too small, download the installer again before proceeding.

"I need more information about the licensing system":

DynaRoad 5.3 and later uses a licensing system by Reprise Software, Inc. They provide support to end-users here.
