Contrary to popular belief, there is still a lot of valuable real estate out there and it’s not necessarily in midtown Manhattan, Silicon Valley or beachfront Malibu. This valued commodity is in the form of property attached to existing commercial developments such as big box retail stores, strip centers, etc. Seeking ways to maximize their investments, developers of these properties are looking at parcels that were once designated for water retention and, realizing their inherent worth, reclaiming them for new construction. Such is the case at The Strip in Canton, Ohio. There, an 8-acre section that once served as the focal drainage point for more than 200 acres of adjacent retail space, is being expanded and fitted with stormwater management piping, covered, compacted and made ready for construction of a pair of new restaurants. Heading up the project is Sitetech, Inc., a firm which is using dozers equipped with Topcon’s 3D-MC2 machine control to cut, grade, and fill not only the two ponds being repurposed, but also a new one being created to help the stormwater mitigation effort. That GPS technology, Sitetech officials say, has allowed them to tackle this challenging project virtually without stakes, keeping production levels up and costs
